PETROLATUM

What Exactly is Petrolatum?

Petrolatum is a refined mixture of semi-solid hydrocarbons obtained from mineral oil. It functions as a high molecular weight occlusive, which means its molecules are too large to enter the skin and instead sit on the surface, forming a protective barrier over the stratum corneum. Unlike plant oils that can break down, oxidize, or be metabolized by skin bacteria, petrolatum is chemically inert. This makes it exceptionally stable, non-reactive with the skin or environment, and one of the most dependable and long-lasting ingredients in skincare.

What Does Petrolatum Do to the Skin?

Petrolatum doesn’t add moisture to the skin; instead, it traps the water already present, creating a protective shield. It provides maximum occlusion, reducing water loss from the skin by over 98%, which is far more effective than most plant oils that only reduce it by 20–30%. Forming a temporary, waterproof barrier, it allows the skin’s natural repair mechanisms to work in a safe, protected environment, free from irritants and stressors. Being inert, petrolatum is non-sensitizing and rarely causes allergies, which is why it’s a key ingredient in ointments for wounds and delicate baby skin. It also softens the outermost layer of the skin, filling in gaps between shedding skin cells, instantly smoothing rough texture, and eliminating the dry and ashy appearance.

Who Should Use Skincare Products with Petrolatum?

People With Very Dry or Dehydrated Skin

Petrolatum is an excellent occlusive, meaning it forms a protective layer on top of the skin to stop moisture from escaping. For people whose skin feels tight, flaky or rough, petrolatum helps trap water inside and keeps the skin soft and hydrated for hours.

People With a Damaged or Weak Skin Barrier

When the skin barrier is compromised due to irritation, harsh products or environmental stress, petrolatum helps seal the skin and prevent further water loss. This allows the barrier to repair itself faster, reducing sensitivity and dryness over time.

People With Cracked Skin (Lips, Heels, Hands)

If you have cracked lips, rough heels, or hands damaged by frequent washing, petrolatum can help heal the area quickly. It softens the hard, cracked skin and prevents water evaporation, which allows the damaged skin to repair itself more effectively.

People Recovering from Skin Treatments (Peels, Laser, Microneedling)

After procedures that make the skin sensitive or raw, petrolatum helps protect the treated area while it heals. It keeps the skin moist and shielded from bacteria, which speeds up recovery and reduces discomfort or dryness.

People With Sensitive Skin Needing Minimal Ingredients

Petrolatum is non irritating, fragrance free and simple. For people who react easily to complex formulas, petrolatum-based products offer gentle moisture without unnecessary ingredients that may trigger irritation.

Who Should Exercise Caution?

People With Oily or Acne-Prone Skin

Petrolatum itself is noncomedogenic, but its thick, occlusive texture can trap sweat, oil, and bacteria if your skin is already oily or acne-prone. This may lead to clogged pores or small breakouts, especially if used in hot or humid weather. Such people should use petrolatum sparingly and avoid applying it over active acne.

People With Very Sensitive or Easily Overwhelmed Skin

Although petrolatum is gentle, some sensitive skin types may feel suffocated or irritated if the product is applied too thickly. Overusing petrolatum may cause redness or a heavy feeling. Introduce it slowly, especially if you are sensitive to occlusive textures.

 People Using Strong Actives

Petrolatum can be extremely helpful for barrier repair, but applying it right after strong actives may intensify irritation by trapping those actives deeper into the skin. To avoid this, wait 20–30 minutes after applying actives or use petrolatum on nights when you’re not using retinoids or acids.

How to Use It Effectively

Apply on Damp Skin for Maximum Hydration

Petrolatum works best when applied over slightly damp skin. After cleansing or using a hydrating toner or serum, a thin layer of petrolatum helps lock in water and active ingredients. This prevents moisture loss and keeps your skin soft and plump for longer.

Use as the Last Step in Your Routine

Because petrolatum is occlusive, it should be applied as the final step in your skincare routine. After serums, treatments, and moisturizers, applying petrolatum seals in all the hydration and nutrients, protecting your skin barrier from environmental stress.

 Apply Sparingly to Avoid Greasiness

A little goes a long way with petrolatum. Use a thin layer rather than thick amounts, especially on the face, to prevent a greasy feeling or pore clogging. Focus on dry areas like cheeks, lips, elbows or heels for targeted hydration.

Use Heavier at Night for Repair

Nighttime is ideal for using petrolatum, as your skin naturally repairs itself while you sleep. Applying a generous layer on dry or damaged areas overnight allows deep hydration and barrier repair without interference from sun or pollution.

Combine With Active Moisturizers for Better Results

You can layer petrolatum over lightweight moisturizers or hydrating serums containing ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin or ceramides. Petrolatum locks in the water and nutrients from these products, making them more effective.

 Patch Test New Products

Even though petrolatum is generally safe, always patch test a new product first, especially if it has added fragrances or other actives. Apply a small amount on the inner arm or behind the ear and check for 24–48 hours to ensure there’s no irritation.

The Protective Power of Petrolatum

Petrolatum is a time-tested, highly effective ingredient for locking in moisture and protecting the skin from dryness, harsh weather, and irritation. Its occlusive nature makes it ideal for very dry skin, cracked areas, sensitive skin, or post-treatment care. Forming a protective barrier, it allows the skin to heal, retain hydration, and stay smooth.
