Lactic Acid in Skincare

Lactic Acid in Skincare

The science of Lactic acid

Lactic acid is often described as a “gentle exfoliating acid,” but it is much more than a surface level treatment. It is a naturally occurring alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) that participates in skin renewal, hydration  and barrier support when used correctly.

What Is Lactic Acid?

Lactic acid is an alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) produced naturally in the human body during glucose metabolism. It is also found in fermented foods such as sour milk and yogurt giving its the tangy taste. Lactic acid is water soluble, meaning it primarily acts on the surface layers of the skin rather than deep inside pores.it is an effective antimicrobial, that means it can stop the growth of bacteria on skin, which helps control breakouts. It is also an antioxidant. This is important for skin health because this property may help minimize the effects of heavy metals found in water, which can damage your skin.

Why is lactic acid used in skincare?

Its larger molecular structure and natural presence in the skin, it exfoliates the surface gradually, reducing the risk of irritation while supporting skin hydration.

It targets:
• Accumulation of dead skin cells on the skin surface
• Rough or uneven skin texture
• Dull, tired-looking complexion
• Mild, surface-level hyperpigmentation
• Dehydration and flaky surface dryness

What Does Lactic Acid Do to the Skin

Gentle chemical exfoliation

Lactic acid works by weakening the bonds (called corneodesmosomes) that hold dead skin cells together in the outermost layer of the skin (the stratum corneum). Because lactic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid that is water soluble and relatively large in size, it acts slowly and mainly on the surface. This controlled action allows dead cells to shed naturally without aggressive abrasion, leading to smoother skin and improved texture.

Improves skin hydration

Lactic acid is part of the skin’s Natural Moisturizing Factor (NMF), a group of molecules responsible for maintaining skin hydration. Chemically, lactic acid has humectant properties, meaning it can bind water molecules and draw them into the outer skin layers. This explains why, unlike harsher exfoliating acids, lactic acid exfoliates while simultaneously increasing water content in the skin.

Brightens and evens skin tone

By promoting regular and controlled cell turnover, lactic acid helps remove pigmented, damaged, or dull surface cells and replace them with newer, healthier ones. This gradual renewal process reduces uneven tone and mild hyperpigmentation over time. The skin reflects light more evenly when dead cell buildup is reduced, which is why brightness improves.

Helps maintain skin strength

Lactic acid helps support the skin’s protective function by maintaining an acidic pH, which is essential for proper enzyme activity and barrier integrity. Since lactic acid naturally occurs in the skin, it supports lipid organization and limits excessive water loss. This results in skin that is more resilient, less reactive, and better protected against environmental stressors.

Who Should Use Lactic Acid?

Dry or dehydrated skin
Lactic acid is gentle and acts as a humectant, meaning it helps the skin attract and hold onto water. Unlike harsher exfoliating acids, it removes dead skin cells without stripping away too much moisture, making dry skin feel smoother, softer, and more hydrated.

Sensitive skin (that cannot tolerate stronger acids)
lactic acid has a larger molecular size, it penetrates the skin more slowly than stronger acids like glycolic acid. This reduces irritation, stinging, and redness, making it a good option for sensitive skin types that still want exfoliation without discomfort.

Dull or uneven skin tone
Lactic acid exfoliates the surface layer of the skin by loosening dead skin cells that make the skin look rough or tired. Once these dead cells are removed, fresher and brighter skin is revealed, helping improve overall skin radiance and evenness.

Mild hyperpigmentation
By gently exfoliating the skin, lactic acid helps fade mild dark spots and discoloration over time. It speeds up skin cell turnover, allowing pigmented cells to shed gradually and be replaced with newer, more evenly toned skin cells.

Early signs of aging
Lactic acid helps smooth fine lines by improving skin texture and supporting mild collagen stimulation. Its hydrating effect also plumps the skin slightly, making fine lines appear less visible and giving the skin a fresher, more youthful look.

Beginner friendly exfoliating acid
Lactic acid is often recommended for beginners because it balances exfoliation with hydration. It is effective yet gentle, making it easier for new users to introduce chemical exfoliation into their skincare routine with a lower risk of irritation.

Who Should Be Careful or Avoid It?

Open wounds or severely damaged skin
Lactic acid should not be applied to skin that is cracked, wounded, or healing. Using acids on broken skin can cause intense stinging, inflammation, and delayed healing because the acid penetrates too deeply into exposed layers.

During eczema or rosacea flare-ups
When eczema or rosacea is active, the skin is already inflamed and highly reactive. Applying lactic acid during these periods can worsen redness, burning, and itching, even though the acid is normally considered gentle.

After recent peels or laser procedures
Following chemical peels or laser treatments, the skin needs time to recover and rebuild itself. Using lactic acid too soon can overwhelm the skin, leading to irritation, peeling, or prolonged sensitivity.

Highly reactive skin
Although lactic acid is mild, higher concentrations can still be too much for very reactive skin. This may result in tingling, redness, or discomfort, especially if the skin is not used to exfoliating acids.

Risk of over exfoliation
Like all exfoliating acids, using lactic acid too often or in high amounts can weaken the skin’s natural protection. This may cause dryness, sensitivity, and increased vulnerability to irritation and environmental damage.

How to Use Lactic Acid Safely and Effectively

Choosing the right concentration
Lactic acid products come in different strengths, and the concentration matters a lot. Beginners should start with lower levels around 5–8% to allow the skin to adjust gradually and reduce the risk of irritation. More experienced users who already tolerate acids well may use 8–12% for stronger exfoliation and better results. Higher concentrations penetrate deeper and should only be used under professional guidance, as they can easily cause irritation or damage if misused.

How often to use lactic acid
Lactic acid works best when used in moderation. Applying it 1–3 times per week is usually enough to exfoliate the skin without overwhelming it. Using it too frequently does not speed up results and may instead lead to redness, dryness, or sensitivity.

Proper application method
For best results, lactic acid should be applied to clean, dry skin. Applying it on damp skin can increase penetration, which may cause stinging or irritation. After the acid has absorbed, following with a moisturizer helps soothe the skin and restore moisture balance.

Sun protection is essential
Exfoliation removes dead skin cells and exposes newer skin underneath, which is more sensitive to sunlight. Daily use of sunscreen is important to protect the skin from sunburn, dark spots, and premature aging while using lactic acid.

Avoid mixing with strong actives
Lactic acid should not be used in the same routine as other strong exfoliants such as glycolic acid, salicylic acid or retinoids. Combining these can overload the skin, leading to irritation, peeling, and discomfort rather than improved skin health.

Beyond Basic Exfoliation

Lactic acid is not just an exfoliant, it is a biologically compatible acid that supports gentle skin renewal while maintaining hydration. Its dual action as an exfoliant and humectant makes it particularly valuable for dry and sensitive skin types. When used thoughtfully, lactic acid helps reveal smoother, brighter skin without compromising barrier health.
